Nearly 20 million Americans 12 years of age or older admit to being current users of illicit drugs. That represents about 8 percent of the total U.S. population in that age group. The number of Americans who admit to having used illicit drugs at least once in the past year is even higher. Results from a U.S. Postal Service study indicate that employees who tested positive on their pre-employment drug test were 77 percent more likely to be discharged within the first three years of employment, and were absent from work 66 percent more often than those who tested negative.
When alcohol abuse is factored in, the picture worsens. Consider this: 54 million Americans admit to binge drinking (defined as consuming at least five drinks on at least one occasion in the past 30 days), and nearly 16 million say they drink heavily (meaning they consume at least five drinks on at least five occasions within a 30-day period.) More than 14 percent of Americans employed full- and part-time report heavy drinking.
No business or governmental entity today is immune to the problems associated with the abuse of drugs and alcohol. Substance abuse contributes to on-the-job accidents, lower productivity, greater absenteeism, higher healthcare costs, and heightened threats to the health and safety of employees.
Global HR Research helps businesses, organizations and institutions reduce these risks by performing urine substance-abuse testing and other related services to detect and deter substance abuse. Global HR Research combines the industry’s standard testing methodologies utilizing both DOT and non-DOT testing with our expertise to ensure clients receive accurate results along with service and support, delivering an effective and efficient testing program.
Global HR Research services include a full suite of third-party administration services as well as expert medical review officer (MRO) services. Couple these with up to date testing techniques that will reduce the bottom line of your testing program. And then add in advanced administration offerings crafted to reduce HR burdens associated with both DOT-(regulated) and non-regulated substance abuse testing.
